Dharamshala is situated on the laps of Dhauladhar Range (Western Himalayas), north-west in the state of Himachal Pradesh, India with a population of around 66,000 (2015). Dharamshala is a town on the upper reaches of the Kangra valley and is surrounded by the dense forest mainly Himalayan Cedar, Grey Oak, Rhododendron trees, etc. is also one of the second heaviest rainfall area in India after Cherrapunji. Founded by the British in 1849 two years after capturing Kangra fort during Anglo-Sikh war, Dharamshala originated as an army subsidiary for troops stationed at Kangra and adopted its name from a sanctuary where a hamlet called Dharamshala. However, most of the British left the place after 1905 earthquake (7.9 RC) which killed around 19,000 people in the Kangra valley. However, many new things were developed later like bringing narrow gauge train, dams, power stations, etc. to the valley. In 1959, His Holiness The Dalai Lama has taken a refugee along with many Tibetan Refugees who followed him to Dharamshala and since then it has become a permanent home to His Holiness in exile. After a year, Tibetan Government in exile was founded in 1960 and many monasteries, nunneries and schools were made in and around Dharamshala. Today, Dharamshala has many tourist attractions & also many Hiking/ trekking routes. Many tourists visit Dharamshala everyday from neighbouring states & from all over the world.
